The James E. Lewis Museum of Art (JELMA) is the cultural extension of Morgan State University's Fine Arts academic program. Developed to enhance the scholastic experience of the University's student population and the community's exposure to works of art, JELMA provides opportunities to experience exhibitions, programs and lectures.
COLLECTION HIGHLIGHTS
The JELMA collection includes a wide range of cultures, genres and media. Highlighting African American, Asian, European and Oceanic art, the work presented comprises sculpture, photography, painting, collage, prints and drawing. We are currently working to bring our entire collection online.

James E. Lewis’ mission was to develop a collection and curricula of African, African American, and American Art at Morgan State in an era when people of color had little to no access to museums and art galleries. By the time of his retirement in 1986 he had amassed one of the most impressive and comprehensive collections of art on the East Coast.
